The Muirfield Centre

The project forms a new business facility for the Social Enterprise and Small Business sectors in Cumbernauld utilising the site of the existing Muirfield Community Facility to create a combined enterprise and community facility.

The completed facility provides Cumbernauld with a purpose built community and enterprise facility which reflects the desired public nature of the building and provides a better environment for all users of the facility and improves efficiency of the users operations.

The building provides 1000m2 of community space, 1000m2 of office space for social enterprise businesses and groups, an 8000m2 civic space to include play and multi-use games area for all ages, and new road access and pathways to link the site more closely to the town centre with the aim of increasing its use.

The site is located within Cumbernauld town centre, locally bounded by residential properties and mature woodland. The existing building previously provided accommodation for several organisations, containing a variety of shared community facilities that sat alongside third sector organisations and an established day nursery.

The new building seeks to create a strong presence within Cumbernauld Town Centre. It forms a new civic realm and parkland that aims to serve the wider Cumbernauld community and enhance the town centre. The building form is therefore deliberately powerful and robust. This hopes to convey the importance of the uses that are held within the building and bring these together within one coherent form. A controlled palette of materials has been chosen to reflect this. The bottom two storeys are formed in brickwork with deep window reveals and colonnades at ground level. The upper storey is formed in glazed curtain walling and cladding panels to form a lightweight ‘cap’ to the building.
