In 2020, Collective Architecture was commissioned to explore redevelopment options for the Possilpoint Community Centre, with a focus on creating a modern, welcoming community hub. An initial study identified numerous issues with the existing building, rendering it unfit for purpose: it had an uninviting and defensive exterior, intimidating massing, a poorly defined entrance, inefficient circulation, and outdated infrastructure.
The study recommended full demolition and a new-build solution as the most effective way to provide a purpose-built facility. However, this option was deemed financially enviable within the available budget. Alternative approaches, including partial renovations and combinations of demolition with new-build extensions, were considered.
Follow-up studies in 2022 further examined these options, but none met the funding constraints. In late 2023, a new affordability cap led to a revised project brief, emphasising the need for a financially viable solution that would meet the client’s spatial and functional requirements, improve the building’s appearance, and upgrade its infrastructure to reduce operational costs.
Collective Architecture, together with a team of consultants, were tasked with designing a deliverable scheme that retained portions of the
existing structure where possible, to keep costs within budget.
The three core concepts to the final design;
A New Inviting Frontage to Engage the Public
The redesigned façade establishes a welcoming connection with the community, creating a visually striking and accessible entrance. Acting as a focal point, the new frontage draws visitors in while balancing aesthetics and functionality, ensuring the building is approachable and inclusive.
Simplified Layout for User-Friendly Navigation
The restructured plan prioritises simplicity to make the building more intuitive and user-friendly. By eliminating unnecessary complexities, the layout allows for seamless navigation, improving functionality and comfort for all visitors. This reorganisation ensures spaces fl ow logically and are easy to understand.
Bringing Light to the Building’s Core
Natural light is introduced into the previously dark central areas of the building, transforming them into vibrant and welcoming spaces. Strategically positioned light wells and openings maximise daylight penetration, creating an uplifting and enjoyable environment. This addition not only enhances the aesthetic quality but also improves the usability and atmosphere of these spaces.
The design reflects Possilpark’s rich industrial heritage, integrating materials and forms that resonate with the neighbourhood’s identity. A striking new frontage and improved outdoor spaces redefine the centre as a community landmark, blending modernisation with cultural respect.
As the project with full planning permission, progresses to RIBA Stage 4, the groundwork laid during this phase ensures a cohesive, efficient design. This refurbishment exemplifies how architectural innovation can revitalise cherished spaces, enhancing their role as community cornerstones. The renewed Possilpoint Community Centre promises to foster social connections, support local resilience, and serve as a beacon of Possilpark’s enduring spirit.
