Water Row is a key development site in Glasgow, pivotal in transforming the city's waterfront. Recognised in Glasgow’s City Plan as a key priority site, it connects Glasgow West to Glasgow South, highlighted by the delivery of a new pedestrian bridge which, together with the new housing has transformed this part of the city.
The completed development forms Phase 1 of a wider strategic plan and vision developed by our practice through an intensive year-long co-design and participation with residents, organisations and stakeholders during 2017-18. At the same time, the Govan-Partick bridge crossing was being developed by Glasgow City Council. This presented the opportunity to integrate wider engagement on this within the co-design process to benefit Govan and the wider city.
Over six months, consultation events with stakeholders, local groups, and residents shaped the strategic plan and vision for the site. Discussions highlighted urban change issues such as river use, active shopfronts for local businesses, and nordic-european inspired public realm models.
Understanding Govan’s heritage is crucial for informed decisions on regeneration. They respect Govan’s historic skyline, carefully considering massing to enhance the area’s character and views. The layout defines urban edges, reinstates Govan Cross, and establishes a strong river frontage, creating incidental views and framing points of interest throughout the site.
The material palette is deliberately restrained to respond to the rich surrounding context. Two concrete facing bricks (Marshals Glencoe Vintage and Mayfair Vintage) were chosen for their significantly lower embodied carbon compared to clay bricks. Warm Pigmento Red zinc cladding is used carefully at balconies, dormers, and closes to create visual interest. This palette aims for a reserved, robust and durable aesthetic, aligning with the surrounding context. Both materials enable a contemporary architecture with depth and tonal variation that will age sympathetically with the existing environment whilst providing low maintenance requirements.
The strong vision, passion and commitment from the client, contractor, design team, residents and wider community is a testament to the success of this project.
